In the fields of visual art and communication design, Bea Stach works interdisciplinary with a conceptual approach.
Starting points for her artistic practice often are sets of self-generated or collected data which can be language, text, images, sound, objects etc. The subject matter of the data can be anything such as scientific observations or phenomenons of our planet we tend to forget in our every day lives. Big interest is paid to the structures these amounts of data establish themselves and which meanings, insights or space they reveal. Of relevance are the entity of this system as well as the single elements it consists of.

The Language of Dust
Interactive java application, 2015.
Digital artwork made from 10 layers of dust on 10 glass plates, collected in various contexts. The Language of Dust lets the viewer travel through space and time. The video is a recording of the interactive processing application.
Developed and produced during my artist’s residency at Hangar production center, Barcelona. The work series explores dust as a material and it’s meaning as an indicator of time and space.

The Smell of the Universe
Audio piece on 10''-vinyl, edition of 300, 2014.
»The Smell of the Universe« is an acoustic picture book released on a 10“ vinyl record. More than one hundred different people have been asked about how the universe smelled. Since there is no definite answer to this question, everyone had to create his personal understanding.
Selected experts working in the fields of astronomy and perception, e.g. the astronaut Sigmund Jähn, astronomers, astrologists, synaesthetes, linguists, sommeliers, as well as common people of all ages and cultural backgrounds have been among the interviewees.
Talking about smells, we actually describe the odor carriers, situations or moods because there is no vocabulary for describing smells in German (as well as English) language. Spoken by the actor Robert Besta with expressive force these collected descriptions almost become tangible creating images in the mind of the listener.
Six selected interviews coping with astronomy and/or perception with the experts mentioned above accompany every record in form of printed matter.

Decisions of the Federal Constitutional Court, Remix
Site fence, 2011
The Federal Constitutional Court of Germany (Bundesverfassungsgericht) has been renovated for three years. On this occasion a competition on designing the site fence was held. The fence should remind the public of the original site of the Court which has moved to another building during that time as well as show some aspects of the work of the judges.
My work shows all words, numbers, punctuation marks and special characters from six decisions of the court in alphabetical order. The institution was founded in 1951. I took one decision text in full length from each of the six decades the institution exists. Words which are used a lot of times become visible at one glance. Their repetition creates new structures of the text. The work reflects the German language as well as the vocabulary of the Federal Constitutional Court.
The following texts were used: Apotheken-Urteil 1968, Adoption I 1968, numerus clausus I 1972, Völkerrecht 1987, Caroline von Monaco I 1998, Vorratsdatenspeicherung 2010.
Urteile des Bundesverfassungsgerichts, Remix and two other realised projects have been awarded the Gunther-Schroff-Grant in 2011.
The Book and Other Books
Book research with Nadja Schoch, 2011
This series is part of the project The Archive as a Productive Space of Conflict.
Within the project created the book »Species of Spaces — An Open Archive of Structual Elements for Book Design«: From The Letter to The Page continuing with The Books culminating in The Book And Other Books followed by A Postscript.
Nadja's and my part is about five general types of books (A Paperback, B Hardcover, C Ring Binder, D Coffee-table book and E Magazine) and their physical relationships to each other.
Munitionsfabrik N° 21
Munitionsfabrik is the magazine of Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. Each issue is created by a different team of editors, writers and graphic designers. The theme of issue N° 21 is »Scheitern« (failure). The content consists mostly of text contributions, therefore we decided to design a paperback, in contrast to the magazine- and newspaper-like formats of former issues. At first glance it seems to be a typical one but looking closer at it a subtle confusion may occur. Upside down layout and tricky typography challenge the reader.
There are 20 inserted pictures, chosen out of 120 different photographs initially rated as a fail by the photographer. Each book is unique because of the individually selected photographs.

The calendars 2012 – 2014 have been exhibited at the 26th International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno, Czech Republic 2014.
Eine Minute / eine Minute
Silkscreen printed poster series, 2011
Poster series for the video installation »Eine Minute / eine Minute« by the media artist Benedikt Dichgans. His video work shows exhibtion spaces where the light will be switched off after one minute and only darkness remains.
A black layer is silkscreenprinted on old exhibition posters from Badischer Kunstverein, the art space where the video installation was exhibited in July and August 2011.

Pencil stencil typeface, 2009
Karo was developed during a workshop held by Avoid Red Arrows. Since the topic of the workshop was »Stencils« Karo was originally designed as a stencil font. Two laser-cut stencils (one for each style) were produced and made suitable for the very common pencil Stabilo 88 which is available in a wide range of colours. The typeface consists of the two styles »Hoch« and »Quer« (horizontal and vertical). Each letter is made of single horizontal or vertical lines, which give a check pattern (german: »Karo«) if you combine these two styles. Using your colour pens will create more possibilities for how to combine all those lines.
Karo was published in Typodarium 2012 and Slanted Magazine #15.
Headline typeface, 2009
Laken is a decorative headline brush-style font with a shadow inspired by the lettering of a laundry in Karlsruhe. The typeface includes the styles Regular, Shadow and Kolor.
